Story & Inspiration

The Plager Brothers is one of eleven paintings I created during the St. Louis Blues’ historic 2019 Stanley Cup Playoff run. Bobby and Barclay Plager were original members of the club, and their retired numbers hang side by side in the rafters at Enterprise Center.

This piece captures an iconic moment from the early 1970s when the brothers played as a defensive pair, the St. Louis Arena, known to fans as the Old Barn and later the Checkerdome, behind them. Bobby and Barclay, along with their brother Bill, were foundational to the Blues’ inaugural 1967-68 season, known for a rugged, physical style of play; Bobby for his devastating hip checks, Barclay for his fearless leadership as team captain. Barclay played his entire NHL career in St. Louis and retired as the franchise leader in games played and penalty minutes, while Bobby spent ten seasons on the ice before becoming a beloved coach, scout, and club ambassador for more than 50 years.
