Story & Inspiration

St. Louis Skyline at Sunset captures the Gateway Arch and city lights reflecting on the Mississippi River, viewed from the eastern bank in Illinois as the sun sets directly behind the arch and beams of colorful clouds converge at its center.

Drips and polka dots add visual texture and energy across the composition. At 630 feet, the stainless steel Gateway Arch is the tallest monument in the United States, an inverted catenary curve with equal height and width, designed by Eero Saarinen. Its legs can shift up to 18 inches in high winds or extreme heat, an engineering feat so precise that construction crews surveyed the site at night to prevent daytime thermal warping. At its base sits the historic Old Courthouse, known for its cast-iron dome and as the site of the pivotal Dred Scott trials, while mid-century and contemporary high-rises, including the 597-foot One Metropolitan Square, peek over the park’s tree line beyond.

Original painting SOLD to a private collector.
