Story & Inspiration

The Amoco Sign honors the iconic gas station sign towering over the intersection of Skinker Boulevard and Clayton Road in St. Louis’s Dogtown neighborhood, painted in watercolor against a beautiful orange and purple sunset, with a glow radiating from the sign and the cars below.

Known as the world’s largest Amoco sign, the landmark became so beloved that the community once forced the state to uncover it after it was accidentally blocked from an air-quality camera. The sign dates back to the 1950s, when the original station was rebuilt and fitted with a red, white, and blue Standard sign; in 1985, Standard Oil officially adopted the Amoco nickname, and within a few years the 40-by-60-foot sign read “AMOCO” for the first time. In 2017, BP finally revived the Amoco brand, converting the station underneath to match the sign that had outlasted it.
