The Gondola Dock captures the quiet beauty and collective anticipation found along Venice’s iconic waterways. Inspired by my journey through the city during the 2022 Venice Biennale, the composition centers on tourists preparing to board gondolas in the Grand Canal. Blending motion, memory, and architectural majesty, the piece invites viewers to pause in that universal moment before a shared experience begins.
Painted after an immersive six-day exploration of Venice, the piece channels the same loose, impressionistic energy artists used to portray the city over 150 years ago. My process began with a colorful abstract underpainting that pushes through the figures and water reflections; working with a rubber scraper, I created expressive layers that let the background breathe into the scene. Drips, splatters, and polka dots across the surface invite viewers to step closer, discovering new elements each time.
