A Sporting Horse: A showjumping tribute rooted in Olympic history and Hermès craftsmanship

A Sporting Horse is a one-of-a-kind artwork of mine, painted directly onto an authentic Hermès Sport scarf designed by Benoît-Pierre Emery and first released in 2013. The scarf's graphic, puzzle-like design abstracts the letters spelling “Hermès Paris” and “Sport” into a grid of stylized tennis courts, football pitches, and running tracks, in a colorway of blues, Hermès orange, gray, peach, and red. I painted the showjumping horse in navy and white transparent layers so the scarf's design shows through, using only shadows and highlights to give the flat silk the illusion of three-dimensional texture. The 90 cm vintage scarf is stretched and mounted to a custom board, its hand-rolled edges left overhanging, and finished in a metallic silver float frame.

Inside the Art: The Story Behind A Sporting Horse

Painted directly on a 100% silk Hermès scarf, A Sporting Horse merges fashion history with fine art. The scarf, “Hermès Sport,” was designed by Benoît-Pierre Emery and first released in 2013. Its graphic, puzzle-like composition abstracts the letters spelling “Hermès Paris” and “Sport” into a grid, alongside stylized renderings of tennis courts, football pitches, and running tracks. This colorway features complementary blues and the signature Hermès orange, along with gray, peach, and hints of red, finished with an Olympic-style track of orange lines around the border.

I painted the showjumping horse using only navy and white in transparent layers, allowing the scarf's original design to show through beneath the paint. By rendering only the shadows and highlights, the flat, mounted silk takes on the illusion of three-dimensional texture, while the horse's anatomy, reins, and tack are all captured with precision.

The original 90 cm vintage Hermès scarf is stretched and mounted to a custom-built board measuring 35 x 35 inches, its hand-rolled edges left overhanging the board to showcase the handmade detail that makes vintage Hermès scarves so valuable. The painting is custom-framed in a metallic silver float frame and signed in the bottom left corner, alongside designer Benoît-Pierre Emery's own signature; Hermès Paris appears in the bottom right. Showjumping has been an Olympic sport for more than a century, debuting at the 1900 Paris Games and returning in its modern format at the 1912 Stockholm Games, where it has remained a fixture of the Summer Olympics ever since.
