Story & Inspiration

One of eleven paintings created during the St. Louis Blues’ historic 2019 Stanley Cup Playoff run, this portrait was saved for last: captain Alex Pietrangelo finally raising the Stanley Cup over his head after a long wait for the city of St. Louis.

While the rest of the series was painted at 48 inches tall, this piece stands 60 inches, a deliberate choice to mark its significance as the capstone of the series and the only painting to include the Stanley Cup itself. The background began as a non-objective painting of bold brushstrokes in dark navy, chosen to set off Pietrangelo’s white jersey and contrast with the shine of the trophy, made by Tiffany & Co.
