The captain, and the Cup, finally together
One of eleven paintings created during the St. Louis Blues’ historic 2019 Stanley Cup Playoff run, this portrait was saved for last, captain Alex Pietrangelo, finally raising the Stanley Cup over his head after a long wait for the city of St. Louis.
Inside the Art: The Story Behind Alex Pietrangelo
While the rest of the series was painted at 48 inches tall, this piece stands 60 inches, a deliberate choice to mark its significance as the capstone of the series and the only painting to include the Stanley Cup itself. The background began as a non-objective painting of bold brushstrokes in dark navy, chosen to set off Pietrangelo’s white jersey and contrast with the shine of the trophy, made by Tiffany & Co.
Accents of warm yellow and bright blue add energy in the Blues’ team colors, while drips, splatters, and polka dots build the sense of motion and emotion on the captain’s face, a moment nine seasons and four years of captaincy in the making for the Canadian defenseman, nicknamed “Petro.” A spot varnish reading “Stanley Cup Champions” is the only one in the entire series, marking this painting as its finale.

Print Technique & Materials
Prints are reproductions of original paintings using a high-quality inkjet printing technique known as "giclee."
Unframed and framed artwork is printed on archival cotton rag paper, which is acid free and will resist fading and discoloration for generations. Unframed prints on paper are unsigned and feature a 1.5"-2" white border around the image. Most unframed prints are non-standard sizes and will require a custom mat to properly display the artwork, though the outer dimensions of the mat will fit standard frame sizes.
All framing is custom made to the exact specifications of each image, with an acid-free white mat and acrylic glazing (glass is prone to breaking when shipped). Most prints are non-traditional sizes and will not fit properly in mats or frames purchased off the shelf, therefore custom framing is recommended.
Canvas prints are referred to as "gallery-wrapped" because the color or image wraps around the sides of the canvas and it is stapled on the back. The canvas is wrapped around 1.5" deep wood stretcher bars and arrives ready to hang.
Framed canvas prints feature a "float frame," which has a 0.25" gap between the edge of the canvas and the frame moulding. The frame is 2" deep.
Custom Mat for Unframed Paper
Most unframed prints are non-standard sizes and will require a custom mat to properly display the artwork, though the outer dimensions of the mat will fit standard frame sizes.
You can purchase a custom mat from your local frame shop or online. If online, we suggest Matboard & More. Choose Arctic White in Decorative Quality, or if you prefer to upgrade, select White Art in Conservation Quality.
