The blues, rendered in wood, wire, and resin

Gary Clark Jr. “I Got My Eyes on You” is a tribute to one of the most talented musicians working today, inspired by watching him perform live at Lollapalooza. Rendered in acrylic, wire, and resin on stained wood, the piece captures Clark’s swagger and the gritty, soulful sound that has made him a modern blues icon.

Inside the Art: The Story Behind Gary Clark Jr. “I Got My Eyes on You”

I painted this piece after seeing Gary Clark Jr. perform live at Lollapalooza, an experience he describes as life-changing. Rather than work purely in acrylic, I built the piece from mixed materials: real wire stands in for guitar strings, recessed beneath the surface and encased in a flat layer of resin, adding genuine texture and dimension to the instrument.

The wood itself is stained a burnt orange, a nod to Clark’s Austin, Texas roots, and paired with an olive green suit that gives the portrait its confident, lived-in style. I focused the composition on Clark’s hands, the true instrument of a blues guitarist, while wood grain, drips, and polka dots surface through the paint to echo the raw, gritty sound of his music.
