A luxury artwork rooted in equestrian history and Hermès heritage
The Stirrup Collection is my one-of-a-kind painting created directly on an authentic Hermès silk scarf. Inspired by the French fashion house’s equestrian roots, this piece honors Hermès’ origin as a harness maker in 1837. The scarf’s original design, Concours d’Étriers (“Stirrup Competition”), features stirrups from around the world and serves as both subject and canvas.
Inside the Art: The Story Behind The Stirrup Collection
Painted directly on a 100% silk Hermès scarf, The Stirrup Collection is an original work that merges fashion history with fine art. The scarf design was released by Hermès in 2012 and was inspired by the brand founder’s personal collection of stirrups from around the world, including rare historical designs such as an 18th-century Chinese bronze stirrup with dragon embellishments and a 19th-century Brazilian stirrup featuring botanical cutwork and a five-point star.
I bring this globally inspired composition to life with acrylic paint, using a carefully built wood support custom-measured to preserve the shape and texture of the original silk. His decision to work on a Hermès scarf was intentional, a nod to the brand’s origin story as a harness and saddle maker and its continued presence in the equestrian world, especially as the title sponsor of Wellington’s Winter Equestrian Festival. The iconic Hermès orange wraps the edges of the piece, enhancing its sense of craftsmanship and brand lineage.
This was the first time I painted on silk, making it a true one-of-one in both concept and execution.
